A Grievance From an Employee, Oh No?

WHAT IS A GRIEVANCE?

Grievances have been around for a long time. Most often, people are familiar with them from their employment. Regardless of your understanding of a grievance, we will keep it simple.

Generally speaking, a grievance is a formal way for you to express a complaint or concern. The type of grievance you file may vary. For example, you may feel that your employee rights have been violated. You may also feel mistreated or treated unfairly.  Further, you may feel that filing a  grievance is the only way for you to voice your situation so that it is heard, addressed and taken seriously. Whatever your reason is,  you should file a grievance once you believe all reasonable measures to resolve your concern have been taken. Assuming, though, that filing a grievance is not the most reasonable way.

A TIME TO LEARN

Human resource professionals should take note. Grievance systems are important learning tools for any organization. As such, they should not be taken lightly. Instead, HR staff should focus on the situation and use it as a tool for growth. Now, when I saw growth I mean it in the sense of uncovering potential issues within the work place and how to respond appropriately. Providing a swift, yet dedicated, and appropriate response, brings value to the employee, situation and your overall company culture. Suppressing and not addressing your employees feelings can, and often will, lead to resentment, frustration, and a decrease in employee morale. Aside from that, it can crush your company.

Remember, your employees are an important vessel to your success. Your employee’s happiness, productivity and purpose is easily swayed by how you treat them, their feelings as well as their values. Plaitoe assists by keeping the process confidential in order to promote the use of an internal grievance system.
